Kastrovounos
Kastrovounos Trail is a short, easy circular walk from Kato Platres through a pine forest with wide views toward Troodos National Forest and the Paphas Forest beyond. This 0.8km loop takes 30–60 minutes and reaches 1,020 meters elevation, offering pleasant uphill forest paths through a mild landscape. The trail is electrically lit throughout, making it suitable for night walks, and features scenic vistas across the surrounding mountain terrain.
The trail begins in Kato Platres (Kato means "lower" in Greek), a pleasant village nestled on the forested slopes of the Troodos massif. From the starting point, the path climbs gently through a pine forest – not steeply, but with enough elevation gain to offer a sense of ascent and accomplishment. The forest here is predominantly composed of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) adapted to the Mediterranean climate, with undergrowth of aromatic shrubs and seasonal wildflowers that vary by season.
The electrical lighting infrastructure makes this one of Cyprus's most accessible evening hikes. Unlike many lit trails elsewhere, which can feel artificial, the Kastrovounos trail's lighting enhances rather than overwhelms the forest experience. From the upper points of the trail, wider panoramic views open across the Troodos National Forest to the south and east, and toward the Paphas Forest massif to the west. The combination of short duration, easy terrain, scenic views, and night-hiking capability makes this an excellent choice for visitors with limited time, families with young children, or anyone seeking evening recreation in the mountains.
