Madari
Madari is a single ridge, and almost every trail here is a way of getting onto it, along it, or up to the fire lookout that anchors it. Eleven routes cross this stretch of the central Troodos above Kyperounta and Kannavia, and the fixed point they all orbit is the Madari lookout at 1,613 m — the only accessible fire-lookout station on the island, with a 360° sweep from the Kyrenia range in the north to the whole central massif in the south.
The lay of the land
The ridge is the reason to come and the thing that shapes every route. Madari Circular is the full expression: 12.1 km and 622 m of climb from near Kyperounta, up the exposed shoulder, four kilometres along the crest, then down through old-growth juniper and Calabrian pine by way of Selladi tou Karamanli and Moutti tis Choras. Four to five hours, and the best ridge day in Cyprus.
If that is too much, the same ridge comes in segments, and they connect. Doxa Soi o Theos – Madari is the 3.6 km climb to the lookout with 301 m of ascent. Tisia tis Madaris is a compact 3 km geo-trail on hard diabase near the lookout road, with dry-stone walls and views to Solia, the Mesaoria plain and Xyliatos Dam. Selladi tou Karamanli – Moutti tis Choras covers 3.8 km of the crest itself. And Agia Irini – Limeria climbs 392 m through Calabrian pine to the Limeria hideouts, used during the 1955–59 struggle.
When to go
Spring and autumn. The ridge sits high enough to stay walkable through summer mornings, and the north-facing forest sections hold real shade — Selladi tou Karamanli – Moutti tis Choras takes only 3.2 hours of direct sun even in midsummer. But the crest itself is exposed on both sides, and the initial climb from Doxa Soi o Theos has no cover at all: Doxa Soi o Theos – Madari collects 9.7 hours. In July and August, be on the ridge early and off it by midday. The crest is windswept and open on both sides, so a mild morning at the trailhead can be cold on top.
Three to start with
- Doxa Soi o Theos – Madari — the direct climb to the lookout, with benches and a drinking fountain on the way up.
- Tisia tis Madaris — maximum view for minimum distance, and the most interesting geology up here.
- Madari Circular — the full day, ridge and forest, for walkers with the legs for 622 m.
Practical notes
There are no forest picnic sites in the Madari area at all — no taps, no shelters, nothing to fall back on. The fountain on the Doxa Soi o Theos climb and the picnic shelter at the lookout itself are what you have, so carry a full day's water even on the short segments.
Kyperounta is the practical base for the southern approaches and Kannavia for the northern ones. Because the ridge trails link end to end, the segments make good one-way walks if you can leave a car at each end; otherwise plan them as there-and-back, and add the return distance before you start.
