The Panagia Asprovouniotissa picnic site is a quiet countryside stop beside the chapel of the same name, about five kilometres north-west of Frenaros in the farmland of the wider Famagusta region. At just 37 m above sea level and outside any state forest, this is not a shady mountain grove but a low, open corner of the eastern lowlands — a place tied to a chapel excursion rather than a forest drive.
The chapel is the real landmark. It is a single-nave vaulted church with a narthex, dated on its architecture and wall paintings to the late 15th or early 16th century, and it still keeps frescoes of the Crucifixion on the west wall, the Dormition of the Theotokos on the south wall, and Agia Paraskevi in the narthex. The spot comes alive for the feast of the Panagia on 8 September, and local community groups and volunteers regularly turn out to prune and clean the grounds — a genuinely community-kept place.
No marked hiking trails pass nearby, so treat it as a destination in itself: a chapel, a picnic, and the flat Famagusta country all around.
