Esentepe - Antiphonitis
Esentepe to Antiphonitis Church is a challenging 13.5km mountain trek in North Cyprus that climbs through pine forest to a spectacular Byzantine monastery perched above the village. The route ascends steadily over 700 meters of elevation gain, following dirt tracks through dense woodland and offering Mediterranean Sea views from multiple vistas. The trail culminates at the 14th-century Antiphonitis Church, a UNESCO-protected site with preserved frescoes and centuries of history.
Beginning from the village of Esentepe, hikers follow a well-defined double-track trail that climbs gradually through pine forests. The first four kilometers are a steady forest walk with modest elevation gain, allowing hikers to warm up before the more challenging upper sections. The dense woodland provides shade for much of the route, though panoramic views of the Mediterranean occasionally break through the trees.
After the initial forest section, the landscape becomes more open and the climb steeper, gaining significantly more elevation over the next sections. The trail ultimately leads to the atmospheric Antiphonitis Church, a Byzantine monastery dating to the 14th century. This remote hilltop sanctuary features remarkable surviving frescoes and represents one of North Cyprus's most historically significant religious sites. The combination of challenging terrain, Mediterranean views, and cultural heritage makes this among the most rewarding long-distance trails in the island's north.
