Cave Trails

11 Caves trails

The caves on our trails come in two kinds: the sea caves of Cape Greko, and a handful of small inland caves in forest and farmland. Eleven trails reach one. None is a caving trip — the cave is the destination, or a stop on an ordinary walk.

Where to start

  • Konnoi – Cyclops Cave — a 1.9 km loop from Konnos Beach along the coast to a cluster of natural caves, Cyclops Cave being the best known.
  • Sea Caves — 4.6 km around the roughest stretch of the Cape Greko shore, with the sea in view almost throughout.
  • Agioi Anargyroi – Sea Caves — an easy 3.8 km from the chapel along the sea-cave coastline, past the Kamara tou Koraka rock bridge.
  • Spilia tis Athasias — 2.1 km through pine forest near Vavatsinia to Athasia Cave, and the one shady trail in this collection.
  • Arnies (short) — a 2.8 km loop near Agios Dimitrianos to the Arnies spring and the cave where Saint Dimitrianos is said to have lived.

Good to know

The Cape Greko coast has no cover at all: its four cave trails take between eleven and thirteen hours of direct sun on a midsummer day. Walk them early or late, carry water, and keep back from the cliff edge when the sea is rough. Konnos Beach, where two of them start, is the obvious place to cool off afterwards.

For gorges and rock formations inland, see the canyon trails.
