Cedar Valley
The Cedar Valley is an easy 5.4 km walk through Cyprus's endemic cedar forest in the Paphos highlands, featuring the remarkable Cedrus brevifolia (Cyprus cedar), a subspecies found nowhere else on earth and closely related to the famous cedars of Lebanon. The trail winds through dense, mature cedar groves reaching up to 40 metres in height, with accompanying small streams, natural cascades, and well-marked paths adorned with bilingual information boards explaining the forest's geology, ecology, and rich archaeological heritage. This accessible, wheelchair-friendly route suits all fitness levels and offers a genuinely unique natural experience—few places in the Mediterranean preserve such extensive endemic coniferous forest. It is a remarkable choice if you want to experience one of Europe's most distinctive natural ecosystems and explore the intersection of natural beauty and human cultural heritage.
Beyond the forest itself, the trail reveals evidence of ancient habitation, including ruins of mills, stone houses, and archaeological tombs scattered through the valley. The cedar trees themselves are cultural symbols in Cyprus, representing strength and resilience, and their slow growth and longevity make them living links to centuries past. Spring visits are particularly rewarding, when wildflowers carpet the forest floor in brilliant colour and the cool shade becomes even more inviting.
The trail can be completed year-round, though spring and autumn offer optimal conditions with comfortable temperatures and blooming flora.
