Kannoures to Agios Nikolaos Stegis is a challenging riverside trek descending through Troodos forest toward one of Cyprus's most important Byzantine churches. This 8.1km trail follows the Karkotis River valley with significant elevation loss, requiring sturdy footwear as sections involve stream crossings, loose stone, and steep descents. The destination, Agios Nikolaos Stegis, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring 12th-century frescoes and sits in a remote canyon below the trail's starting point.
Beginning from the camp area near Troodos, the trail follows the Karkotis River valley as it descends northward through the national forest. The river, a significant waterway by Cypriot standards, cuts a narrow canyon through the landscape, and the trail generally stays close to its course. Hikers encounter diverse forest ecosystems as elevation decreases – from high-altitude mountain forest through transitional zones toward riparian vegetation adapted to the river's microhabitat.
The trail's descent covers substantial elevation loss, which creates challenging footing on the return ascent should hikers attempt the full circuit. Throughout the walk, the sound and presence of the Karkotis River provides a constant companion. Near the end of the trail, hikers pass close to an abandoned chrome mine – a reminder of Cyprus's industrial history – before reaching Agios Nikolaos Stegis. This 12th-century Byzantine church, protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, features remarkable surviving frescoes and represents one of the Troodos region's most historically and artistically significant cultural monuments. The combination of challenging terrain, river scenery, and high-value cultural destination makes this among the most rewarding longer trails in the mountains.

Hard one. Many claim this is the most challenging of the mainstream trails in Cyprus. Done it during the summer (not recommended). There isn't much shade. The scenery is for sure different but there are no epic views. For me the ratio of difficulty-to-reward is disanalogous.
