Orchard Trails

12 Orchards trails

Twelve trails through working orchards and nut groves: hazelnuts in the mountain villages, pomegranates at Agridia, walnuts and figs along the village streams. They are the gentlest walks we have — half of them are under 2 km.

Where to start

  • Alona's Hazelnut Forest – Petros Vanezis — a 1.3 km loop in Pitsilia through dense plantings of hazelnut, cherry, apple and almond.
  • Fountoukodasos Polistipou — 700 m from the old village fountain through a hazelnut wood at 1,150 m, past an oak reckoned to be 840 years old.
  • The Rodio of Agridia (linear) — 5.3 km from Pomegranate Park, named for the tree the village is known for.
  • Kampi — 900 m along a river valley of walnut, fig, olive and plane, known for its nightingales and lit for evening walks.
  • Arnies (short) — a 2.8 km loop near Agios Dimitrianos through crops, orchards and woodland to the Arnies spring.

Good to know

Timing is the whole point. Blossom comes in spring, cherries in early summer, and hazelnuts, walnuts and pomegranates towards autumn. These are working orchards, not public ones: the fruit belongs to someone, so buy it in the village rather than picking it on the way.

Orchards grow where there is water, and most of these trails follow a stream — see the river trails for more of the same valleys.
