Lake Trails

6 Lakes trails

Lakes in Cyprus are either reservoirs or salt lakes, and six of our trails reach one. They are small walks for the most part: a kilometre through pines to a mountain reservoir, or a few hundred metres out to the edge of the Akrotiri salt lake.

Where to start

  • Kourteli — 500 m on the flat, along an old path from Akrotiri village towards the Akrotiri Salt Lake. This is the one for flamingos and wetland plants.
  • Alonatsia — 1 km through pine forest and over small wooden bridges to the Kato Mylos reservoir near Agros, with a picnic site on the way.
  • Agros – Kato Mylos — the longer way to the same water: a 6.3 km loop through the orchards and rose gardens of Agros, with 279 m of climbing.
  • The Rodio of Agridia (linear) — 5.3 km from Pomegranate Park in Agridia towards the village dam.

Good to know

The salt lake is seasonal. It fills with the winter rain, which is when the flamingos come, and shrinks back to a white crust over the summer. The mountain reservoirs hold water all year but drop as the dry season goes on.

Kourteli has no shade at all — close to fourteen hours of direct sun in midsummer — so keep it for winter, when the birds are there anyway. For the big reservoirs and the walks around them, see the dam trails.
