Agios Georgios is the big city-side picnic area of Athalassa National Forest Park, only about 7 km from the centre of Nicosia — the capital's green lung of some 840 hectares between Aglantzia, Strovolos, Latsia and Geri. With room for around 431 people at 157 m, it is where Nicosia heads on weekends for a table under the trees without leaving town.
One rule sets it apart from most Cypriot picnic sites: lighting fires is not allowed here at all, so plan for a picnic basket rather than a barbecue. Otherwise the site is thoroughly family-ready — drinking water, a children's playground and wheelchair-friendly access — and the park around it adds a lake, a bird observation point, a free botanical garden, some 20 km of walking trails and a 16 km cycling path.
Four of the park's marked walks start practically at the tables: Athalassa: Agios Georgios and Athalassa: Picnic Area - Agios Georgios begin within about 100 m, while Athalassa: Agios Georgios - Botanical Gardens and Athalassa: Nations Park - Agios Georgios set off some 160 m away.
