Kionia is the Machairas forest's high picnic ground, set at about 1,220 m near the forest's highest tops, 6 km from Machairas Monastery — coming up from Kapedes, the signed left turn towards Kionia appears about 1 km before the monastery. The surrounding country belongs to the Machairas National Forest Park, a Natura 2000 site, and the picnic ground wears its mountain setting lightly: spring water that the Department of Forests has piped to taps — drinkable, and famously cold — plus barbecue hearths, wheelchair-accessible facilities and official space for around 600 people. There is no playground.

It is also one of the best walking bases on this side of the island: the Kionia - Profitis Ilias nature trail begins right at the picnic ground, heading out towards Profitis Ilias with long views over the Mesaoria plain, the E4 passes equally close, and the twin Kakokefalos - Mantra tou Kampiou (left) and (right) routes start under 400 m away.
