Athalassa: Botanical Garden - Picnic Area

This flat, family-friendly walk links two of Athalassa National Forest Park's main attractions: the Botanical Garden and the Picnic Area. It offers an easy introduction to Nicosia's 840-hectare urban green space, showcasing native Cyprus flora alongside planted species in a garden setting. The route is entirely level, making it ideal for a leisurely morning or afternoon stroll, and it carries genuine educational value if you're interested in learning about the island's plant heritage. The Botanical Garden itself was designed and created by Cyprus's Forest Department and covers about 4.5 hectares, hosting over 200 indigenous and exotic plant species. As you walk from the garden toward the Picnic Area, you pass through part of the broader Athalassa park ecosystem, which supports more than 300 trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants, along with rich birdlife. The landscape is mixed: you'll encounter native Cyprus plants alongside planted pines, acacias, and other species that have become part of the park's identity over decades.

Because this is an urban park on the southeastern edge of Nicosia, the atmosphere is quite different from remote mountain or coastal trails. There is a real sense of greenery in the city, but also the proximity of urban life. The trade-off is convenience: the Botanical Garden has visitor facilities, free admission, and the Picnic Area offers tables and shade for lunch or a rest stop.
