Bridge Trails

16 Bridges trails

The best-known bridges in Cyprus are the Venetian ones: single stone arches on the old pack routes through the Paphos Forest. Sixteen of our trails cross a bridge of some kind, from those medieval arches to a wooden footbridge over a village stream.

Where to start

  • Venetian Bridges — the full route: 19.3 km through the forest to the Roudia, Kelefos and Elia bridges, built under Venetian rule (1489–1571). It climbs 660 m and is linear, so plan the transport as well as the day.
  • Treis Elies — the easy version: 1.8 km beside the Drakontas river to two Venetian bridges, gentle enough for children.
  • Milia Bridge — under a kilometre between Platres and a 13th-century single-arch bridge, but with 114 m of height on a steep, loose path.
  • Neromylos (Water Mill) — a 4.2 km loop from Koilani down to the Kryos river and its medieval bridge.
  • Machairas – Politiko — 5.5 km through the Pediaios gorge, with a bridge across the ravine.

Good to know

Bridges sit in valleys, and valleys have trees: six of the sixteen are in our Shady collection, and only one takes eleven hours or more of direct sun in midsummer.

The rivers under them run highest from winter into spring. That is when the arches look their best — and when the steep approach to Milia is at its most slippery. Half of these trails are 2 km or shorter, so a bridge is an easy thing to add to a day in the mountains. For the valleys themselves, see the river trails.
